The tale of Marten and Oopjen starts in 1633 when they get married. A year later they had their portraits painted by Rembrandt van Rijn, most likely Marten knew the painter from his studies in Leiden. What’s so extraordinary about this tale is that the portraits are the biggest Rembrandt has made in his career and it shows so much display of luxury. Oopjen came from a very wealthy family, whilst Marten did not. Therefore it was believed that the marriage was out of love, and not out of money as with many marriages in that era.
